A GMB Universal Joint also known as a UJ or Hardy Spicer, complete with additional cup seals, internal circlips & grease nipple manufactured by OEM supplier GMB for the Hilux Pickup, Hilux Surfs & Land Cruisers.

GMB from Japan are widely recognised as the leading manufacturer of UJ's for both OEM & aftermarket. At over 150 grams heavier than other aftermarket universal joints proving the quality of the materials used. Unlike other branded Universal Joints the GMB UJ's have additional cup seals as pictured which stops grease from dispersing out of the cups when greasing the UJ, this maintaining the level of grease around the needle roller bearings.

These are components machined to extreme tolerances, care must be taken on assembly to avoid damaging the internal needle roller bearings which can be easily cracked during assembly.

Universal joint consists of spider(cross) and 4 grease-filled roller bearings. It can transmit large torque at low friction. Spider with journal pegs and bearing cases as outer ring were hot forged or cold formed and machined. They are later carburized in furnace so that increased ruggedness and wear resisitance are obtained. Parts are finally ground to designed size under severe tolerance. Oil seal as well as dust cover are also in use to protect internal journal area from intrusion of foreign material. Variety of grades and materials are selected to repond to extreme conditions such as very hot / very cold temperatures.

Drive shafts incorporated with universal joints are widely used within the automotive industry and other industrial areas. Purpose: high torque transmission in limited space. Driveline components link the Engine/Transmission system to the driven wheels and include propeller shaft, differential gear and final drive in the axles and drive shafts. GMB Supplies Universal Joints for propeller shafts and drive shafts.

Fits Rear Shafts as follows:

  • All Hilux Pickups listed on rear shafts where a single UJ joint is used (Mk5 KDN165 etc. does not fit the large double joint on the rear shaft at the centre bearing).
  • Hilux Surf LN130, KZN130 & 4 Runner - fits both rear single joint UJ's on the rear shaft
  • Hilux Surf KZN185 series - Just fits the single UJ at the differential end, not the double wide angle joint at the gearbox end
  • Land Cruiser 70 series - Both UJ's on rear shaft
  • Land Cruiser 90 series - Just fits the single UJ at the differential end, not the double wide angle joint at the gearbox end
  • Land Cruiser 100 series - Both UJ's on rear shaft

Fits Front Shafts as follows:

  • All listed Hilux Pickups but only the one single UJ joint at the differential end - not wide angle joint at Transfer box
  • Hilux Surf LN130, KZN130 & 4 Runner - Only fits the one single UJ at the differential end.
  • Hilux Surf KZN185 series - fits both front prop UJ's
  • Land Cruiser 70 series - fits both front prop UJ's
  • Land Cruiser 90 series - fits both front prop UJ's
  • Land Cruiser 80 series - fits either end of front prop shaft only (not rear shaft).

Do the Universal Joints need to be greased after they have been fitted?
Yes, the Universal Joint must be lubricated when assembled.

  1. Use Multipurpose Lithium Grease to grease any new UJ.
  2. Hold pressure gun on grease nipple fitting until all air is purged and the new grease flows continuously from all four bearing cup seals.

Note: A retaining grease was used to hold the bearings for assembly. Initial pressure of the grease gun often forces this retaining grease from the cup seals. Do not mistake this initial flow as the grease being pumped into cross.

Due to the fact that universal Joints are a specialist product, they should be fitted by a suitably qualified automotive technician to ensure correct operation and duration of the part.
