Rancho RS5000 explained:
Rancho RS500 are Hydraulic with a closed foam cell element used to replace Gas. This closed foam cell is responsible for absorption and reaction required to delay and discourage the tendency of the shock absorbers fluid boiling point.
The advantage of using a foam cell with hydraulic is considerable less space than gas, this allows the shock to be “top filled” with oil and thus benefit from maximum heat dissipation.
They have a velocity sensing valve inside to control the damping. That is they generate a damping force proportional to the velocity of compression or extension of the shock.
Compress them slow (low velocity) and you get a low force, compress them fast (high velocity) and you get a high force of damping. This is why when you receive a new RS5000 it is normal to be able to compress and extend the shock by hand.
Gas charged shocks have a high pressure gas inside that creates an extending force, this force has nothing to do with damping, so in general
RS5000 shocks are excellent for alround use, used gently they dampen with a low velocity, used aggressively and they dampen with a high velocity
