Rear prop shaft centre bearing carrier for the Hilux Pickup 1984-1997 fitted to the front section of the rear prop shaft.

  • This centre bearing has an outer steel cage as per images
  • In the centre lies an integrated inner roller bearing race supported by a super strong rubber mount which provides the flex to the mounting, either side of the bearing are two Nitrile seals preventing contaminants from entering.
  • Its the quality of these components that sets this make of bearing aside.

Assembly:

  • The centre bearing supports the prop shaft when a 2 piece shaft is fitted, the cage is mounted to the chassis via the two retaining bolts, care should be taken to keep the prop shaft aligned during assembly.
  • The whole Centre Bearing Mount is fitted to the front section of the rear prop shaft and retained by the flange and central nut. Once removed the complete prop shaft centre bearing mounting with cage simply slides off the prop shaft, look out for the centre-bearing shim that should be fitted (See Questions tab for more info).
  • Always mark the splined flange position in relation to the main shaft so that it fits back in the same position else the UJ alignment will be out, also ensure the bearing is fitted the correct way up to help reduce the overall angle of the shaft alignment.

Prop shaft centre bearings fail over time, the bearing itself can become noisy or the rubber bushing can become soft, perished or even split causing vibration or even knocking noises. Look out for any oil spraying onto the mount as this will certainly soften and reduce the life of a bearing mount.

Product Reviews for Rear Prop Shaft Centre Bearing

Questions & Answers for Rear Prop Shaft Centre Bearing

Do I need any special equipment to fit?
No, once the prop is removed by simply undoing the central flange nut, you can slide the flange off the shaft, the complete centre bearing then also slides off the prop shaft.

Do I need to mark the flange?
Yes, the flange is splined to the main shaft, make a mark prior to removing aligning both flange and main shaft so that it goes back on in the same position.

Is a shim fitted between the flange and centre bearing?
Not always but in the main, yes. When the shaft is manufactured there has to be tolerance between the flange and the centre bearing rubber else the flange will wear into the rubber causing failure.
At no time should any part of the flange or any revolving part contact the rubber else it will simply burn through.
Toyota therefore, added a small thin shim, depending on clearance, it is fitted between the flange and the centre bearing just spacing it away slightly and giving clearance.
Our advice is to check carefully when removing as sometimes the shim can stick to the old bearing face or the flange and you may not even know its there.

Will the prop shaft centre bearing fit any way around?
No, the cage of the centre bearing is designed to angle the bearing support more towards the rear differential reducing the prop shaft alignment angle, ensure you fit it the correct way around.

Is there movement after fitting?
Yes, the very nature of the mount is a rubber support, therefore you will always have some movement within the rubber mounting.
